A moderately strong earthquake struck deep below Rotorua last night.

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck 160 km below Rotorua at 8:01 p.m. last night. The quake, centred 20 km north-east of Rotorua (20 km east of Ngongotaha) occurred on or in the Pacific tectonic plate well below the city.
The earthquake showed strong traces on many North Island seismographs, and may have been felt in eastern parts of the North Island.
No felt reports have been filed with GeoNet at this time.
