A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck beneath the Bay of Plenty this evening.

A magnitude 6.4 undersea earthquake struck 90 km north of White Island, 120 km north of Te Kaha, at 5:14 this evening, New Zealand Daylight Time.
The deep quake, centred 280 km below the bay was felt from Northland to Canterbury and Westland with 1300 people filing reports with GeoNet within two hours of the quake. Strong shaking was reported from Gisborne, Wellington, Nelson, and Christchurch residents.
Geoscience Australia reports the quake as magnitude 5.2 at a depth of 300 km and the U.S. Geological Survey reports the event as magnitude 5.3 also at a depth of 300 km.
