Strong Quake, Southern Ocean

A strong earthquake struck beneath the southern ocean this afternoon.

Wednesday 10th November 2010

A shallow magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck the south-east Indian Ridge at 5:05 this afternoon, New Zealand Daylight Time. The quake was centred 2250 km south-west of Perth, Western Australia at a depth of 10.7 km according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Geoscience Australia also reports the quake as magnitude 6.3 but deeper at 82 km.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has not issued a bulletin for this event.
