Strong Quake, Southern Kermadecs

A strong earthquake struck the southern Kermadec Islands this morning.

A magnitude 6.0 undersea earthquake struck to the south of the Kermadec Islands at 5:19 this morning, New Zealand Daylight Time. Analysis by Geoscience Australia puts the epicentre about 500 km north-east of East Cape at a depth of 28 km.

Preliminary analysis by the U.S. Geological Survey reports that the quake was magnitude 5.9 and centred 488 km south of Raoul Island. An initial estimation of depth suggests 1 km, but this is likely to be reviewed.

    Further analysis by US Geological Survey puts the epicentre 245 km south of L’Esperance Rock (675 km east-north-east of Auckland) at a depth of 10 km.
