A moderately strong, deep earthquake struck near White Island overnight.

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck 80 km north of White Island (120 km north-west of Te Kaha) at 12:59 this morning. The undersea quake, which was 230 km deep, was felt from Bay of Plenty to Canterbury.
